Frederiksborg Slot, Hillerød

Royal Palace and Denmark's National History Museum

Frederiksborg Slot is in our view,  probably the very best and most interesting place to visit in Denmark.

The Royal Palace is just over 400 years old and is about 35 Kilometers North West of Copenhagen at Hillerød.

Starting from Copenhagen The Tour takes about 4+ hours on average by the time we return to Copenhagen.

The Palace was built during Christian IV's reign to impress. After a fire in 1859 destroyed part of the Palace the

Carlsberg owner J C Jacobsen provided the funds to restore the Palace and set up Denmark's National History Museum.

Most customers like to include a quick tour to Helsingør to see Hamlet's Castle, Kronborg Slot which

is a UNESCO World Heritage Site but truthfully not as interesting inside as Frederiksborg Slot. On the  way from

Hillerød to Helsingør we stop quickly at Fredensborg Slot where the Danish Queen and Royal Family have a Summer Palace .

After Helsingør it is usual to travel down to Copenhagen by Strandvejen so as to see the 'Danish Riviera' and pass by

the World famous Modern Art Museum of Louisiana, Karen Blixen's (Out of Africa) House,  and Hvidøvre Hus at

Klampenborg owned by  the Pharmaceutical Company, Novo Nordisk but previously lived in by two Danish Princesses

that both became Empresses.  Queen Alexandra who was married to Queen Victoria's son The Prince of Wales who became

Kind Edward VII of England, and her sister Tsarina Marie Federovna  ( Princess  Dagmar)  married to Alexander III  of  Russia and

mother of the last Tsar Nicholas II.

The trip down the Coast provides a chance to see the Coastline of Sweden and  on a clear day  the Øresund bridge between

Copenhagen and Malmo andthe Turning Torso building in Malmo designed by Santiago Calatrava, a stunning and unique building.

Starting from Copenhagen it will require approx 4-5 hours for a Tour to Frederiksborg

Our best advice is to visit Frederiksborg Slot and add on the extension for a nice 7 - 8 hour Tour of North Sjælland.

( Roskilde Viking Ship Museum and Cathedral or Kronborg Slot at Helsingør being the normal ones)
